What Makes A Ship Move?

Mechanics Corner A Journal of Applied Mechanics and Mathematics by DrD, #47                                                               What Makes a Ship Move?     One of the problems that often confronts engineers is the description of large, interconnected systems. Engineers tend to specialize, so that one is very knowledgeable on gears, another knows bearings, a third knows pumps, but none of them are comfortable with the whole system. In the automotive contex

Planetary Gear Challenge, #55

Mechanics Corner     A Journal of Applied Mechanics and Mathematics by DrD, #55                                                              Planetary Gear Challenge Introduction     Back in the mid-1990s, I worked as the "in-house consultant" for a small aerospace manufacturing firm in the Chicago suburbs (500 employees). The general rule was simply that any engineer in the company could bring me any problem, and I would try to give them a solution. It was one of the happiest

Mining Truck Power Take Off Unit Thompson Couplings TCAE-R-2

TCAE-2-R PTO Hydraulics Application – Loadpro Australia - X60 Truck   We have recently supplied a TCAE-2-R couplings to Loadpro Australia for a PTO hydraulics application for the new X60 Off Highway Truck to be used in the mining industry. Loadpro pride themselves on offering Efficient Transport Solutions and so by using the Thompson Couplings TCAE-2-R coupling means the X60 truck brings high efficiency and significant benefits to the mining and construction industries and is sui

No need to Laser Align this coupling! Thompson Couplings

Where you told you MUST laser align a coupling? Do you find it takes valuable time off your engineers day or is an added cost to your business? The Thompson Coupling is revolutionary in several ways, the main unique feature is it does not need to be laser aligned! This goes against what most are taught in college or on training as most trainers have never encountered the Thompson Coupling before. There is a short video attached to this blog sarahw@thompsoncouplings.com No laser a

How to... define monitors (report definitions) in Ansys Fluent

There is often a situation when, after completing the analysis and obtaining a satisfactory level of partial equations, we may be unpleasantly surprised when we for example plot the  temperature in the RESULTS module.  Example of monitor in Fluent It may happen that the partial equations have an acceptable value, while the temperature in the solid domain or in the gas domain fluctuates (specially in static analyzes). This is disturbing information for us because

5 tips to survive a Seminar successfully!

Seminars have always been an important aspect of education. It's an opportunity to either gain knowledge on an unknown topic or develop ideas regarding something you already know. It's a place where you meet highly skilled persons and get to know their recent researches. You should attend at least a couple of seminars annually to keep yourself updated about the advancements taking place in your field. I've seen many people who keep avoiding seminars, although interested, just because they have nev

It was a part of a much bigger problem with which the student was engaged, but this is quite enough to hold our interest. The results are differential equations of motion which could

Mine Hoist Problem, Hint #3

Mechanics Corner A Journal of Mechanics & Mathematics by DrD, #54C                                                          Mine Hoist Problem, Hint #3   Introduction The original Mine Hoist Problem was posted 23 August, and it is not 10 October, over 6 weeks later. Thus far, I have not received any attempts at a solution. In this third (and probably last) hint, I want to explore some new ideas and also re-work much of the second hint in vector form. It will be

Hint for Mine Hoist Problem, #54

It appears that only a very few folks are even attempting these problems, but it also appears that no one has sent me a solution. For that reason, a small hint seems to be in order. Hint: Turn the picture upside down. For most of us, it is conceptually easier to think about the problem if the X-axis goes to the right and the Y-axis is upward. Of course, if you do this, you must recall that gravity then acts up, not down. Don't be shy; give it a try!!

This has gotten me to thinking about some other hoist related problems, and here I present three variations on a new problem. The problem is much the same in all three cases, with

What options do I have for an electronics component going end of life?

The constant evolution of technology has meant that companies in the technology sector must adapt every day. For this reason, many mechanisms have been created to reduce production costs and increase the productivity and efficiency of their business models. So, we will talk about obsolescence, or end of life of the electronic components we use every day. What options do we have for an electronics component going end of life? Since, as mentioned above, part of the companies' strategies are based

Suddenly Lifted Bar - Revised

The previous post on this topic was certainly acceptable for engineering purposes, but there was one small oversight in the model. Many would actually prefer that oversight because it makes the algebra quite a  bit less complex. Even so, it is not quite correct, so this revised post is offered to correct the oversight. There are also a few additional comments that may be of interest, and a final question for the readers to consider. DrD LiftedBar_Revised.pdf

5 Technologies Driving MEP Sustainability

Nowadays, the construction industry is echoing with the word "Sustainability." Everyone seems to be focused on finding more sustainable design solutions for building structures and objects.   The moment we realized that we would have to work on installing eco-friendly systems to help the planet recover from the damage done by human hand, most new construction projects were required to be eco-friendly.   However, going green isn't as simple as it sounds. It's a huge challenge, and worki

Why You Shouuld NOT Use the D'Alembert's Principle

Mechanics Corner   #50 A Journal of Applied Mechanics and Mathematics by DrD                                    Why You Should NOT Use the D'Alembert's Principle I think it is safe to say that every engineering student studies both Statics and Dynamics. We are told that Statics is easier than Dynamics, which is often true but not so in all cases. When we get to Dynamics, many teachers, particularly physics teachers, will urge the use of something called D'Alembert's Principle. The
